THE POWER OF SIMPLE TRAINING
Most athletes don’t have a training problem. They have a complexity problem.
The Complexity Tax
Every time you add something to a training session that doesn’t need to be there, you pay a tax. Not in money — in attention. In energy. In the one thing you actually needed to get better at.
Call it the Complexity Tax.
You came in to work on your check hook. But then you added three other combinations because you felt like you should be doing more. Then a conditioning circuit because you saw something on Instagram. Then some footwork drills that weren’t connected to anything you were building. By the end of the session, you touched twelve things and mastered zero of them.
The Complexity Tax doesn’t show up on the day. It shows up six weeks later when you realize nothing actually got better.
Simple Training is the answer to the Complexity Tax. Not easy training — simple training. One emphasis per session. One thing that everything else serves. That’s it.
The 4-Part Session Structure
Every session inside the ElCoachCasey system follows the same four parts. Not because it’s a template — because this sequence works and deviating from it is how you start paying the tax again.
Part 1 — Warm Up
Footwork patterns. We name the emphasis for the day out loud and we connect a combination to it. You’re not just getting loose — you’re setting the lens for everything that follows.
Part 2 — Main Work
The combination goes on the bag or in shadow. This is where the emphasis lives. The combination isn’t decoration — it’s the vehicle for the skill you’re actually building.
Part 3 — Cool Down
Slow shadow work. Punch technique. Abs. The pace drops, the focus sharpens. You’re ingraining what you just worked on, not adding new problems to solve.
Part 4 — Film Study
You watch fighters who did the thing you just trained. Not to copy their style — to see the principle in action at the highest level. It connects the technical work to the real thing.
Four parts. Same every time. The variation is in the emphasis, not the structure. The structure is what keeps the Complexity Tax from creeping back in.
Week 1 — Floyd Mayweather and the Check Hook
Week 1 of the 12-Week Program is the Strength Foundation phase. On the boxing side, every day follows the fixed split — and this week, every session is built around Floyd Mayweather and one combination: the check hook.
The check hook is the most misunderstood punch in boxing. People think it’s a power shot. It’s not. It’s a position punch — a pivot that turns your opponent’s aggression into your exit lane. Floyd used it to end the Hatton fight in Round 10. Skip the footwork and you’re just arm-punching. Learn it, and you’ve got a tool that turns someone else’s pressure into your opening.
This week’s film study, coach breakdown, heavy bag session, and all 6 guided workouts are available now inside the Daily ISH Fighter Library.
Your 6-Day Schedule — Week 1
Monday — Footwork Day 1
Tuesday — Head Movement Day 1
Wednesday — Hands Day 1
Thursday — Footwork Day 2
Friday — Head Movement Day 2
Saturday — Hands Day 2
Each day uses the check hook as the combination — what changes is which pillar you’re focusing on. Footwork days, the emphasis is the pivot step. Head movement days, it’s the slip entry. Hands days, it’s the punch mechanics and timing. Same combination. Different lens every session. That’s how the Complexity Tax gets paid down over a week instead of in one chaotic session.
Simple isn’t easy. It just requires you to actually commit to one thing at a time instead of pretending you can fix everything at once.
The check hook film study, coach breakdown, and all 6 guided workouts are inside the Daily ISH Fighter Library. Week 1 of the 12-Week Program runs alongside it — boxing days built on the same structure, same combination.
